Makarfi's tenure was extended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party and given 12 months within which to organise the convention.
The NEC includes the party's board of trustees, the PDP governors, the National Assembly party caucus, the national caucus, the 36 state PDP chairmen and national officers of the party.
Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president as well as Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state endorsed the decision and moved that the caretaker committee should continue to remain in office.
Other members of the party supported the motion agreeing that the convention be moved to at least three months from now.
The decision was taken after a meeting of top party members including governors and senators at the government house in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
In his response Makarfi, who said it was not time for long speech, asked all the caretaker committee members to rise from their seats.
He thereafter accepted the extension with a promise that the party would come out of the crisis stronger.
